The Whales of Puerto Penasco visit Grupo Mayan Resorts

While the images of the calm sea are embedded within the mind of every visitor to Puerto Penasco however the greatest image to be saved as a remembrance is that of viewing the Humpback whale in all her slender. Many of the Grupo Mayan Resorts visitors have marveled at the humpbacks spray reaching such high heights that it was clearly visible from the shoreline.

In their attempts to escape the cold northern weather, the Humpbacks arrive in groups to Puerto Penasco where these whales reproduce and in some cases give birth to young calves occasionally under the watchful eyes of Grupo Mayan Resorts guest. The whale’s gestation period will lasts for 12 months.

The Humpback whale is a continual popular attraction to the many Grupo Mayan Resorts visitors since from their arrival until their departure they are a source of enjoyment for all. Many of the guests secure trips into the sea to get a closer view of these magnificent mammals. Humpbacks have a life expectancy of forty-five years thus being a creature of habit they return to Grupo Mayan Resorts year after year.

The humpbacks although lacking any sort of vocal cord they do seem to possess the ability to emit certain sounds such as moans, cries and squeaks using valves located within their larynx. This feather tends to draw many of the Grupo Mayan Resorts guest to the beachfront in an effort to hear the whales as they make these sounds. The usual duration of the whale sounds range from 6 minutes to a period of 35 minutes. In zoologist terms these communications are commonly known as the songs of whales.

Towards the end of March the whales start their lengthy crossings and returning to their polar regions. The young have mastered swimming but they remain near to their mother for protection. Currently whales are considered a protected species with International agreements and Grupo Mayan Resorts is glad to provide glimpses of these fascinating creatures to all their guest and their families.

Our natural resources are important and as such we consider the Humpback whales as International resource. All visitors and guest are fully encouraged to watch the whales at Puerto Penasco however please watch them from a distance showing them the proper respect they deserve. Grupo Mayan Resorts firmly believe that whales belong to all of us and as thus all of us have outr own responsibility protect them.
