Grupo Mayan Resorts: Fred Couples

Known as “Boom Boom” for his booming driving ability and “Freddie Cool” for his easy going and laid back style of play, Freddie Couples is one of golf´s most beloved players say the Grupo Mayan golf pros.
Freddie Cool was born in Washington in 1959. His father worked for Seattle´s parks department, which gave Fred access to golf courses as a young man. As a young teen Fred caddied at different courses and one famous golfer gave him his first set of clubs. Fred reports that this first set was small and consisted of five clubs but he treasured each one of them.

Couples practiced with these clubs diligently and became one of the top amateurs in the Northwest region. He went to college in Texas and continued to play and win awards on his college golf team say the Grupo Mayan golf pros.

Couples became a pro golfer in 1980. He had his first PGA win in 1983 at the Kemper Open and continued to win other titles, report the Grupo Mayan golf pros, throughout the 80´s. In 1987 he beat golfing great Lee Trevino at the Players Championship.

Couples started to become a household name in the 1990´s. He won consistently and was deemed the PGA´s player of the year in 1992. According to the Grupo Mayan golf pros he spent many months ranked as golf´s number one player. In 1992 Fred Couples achieved one of his highest honors when he won the Masters Golf Tournament. He has stated that this one event was the highlight of his career and the culmination and reward for his many years of dedicated practice.

Unfortunately, say the Grupo Mayan golf pros, it was soon after this career defining win that Couples began to experience back problems. These back problems were severe enough to affect his play. With treatment he was able to continue on with the sport he loved but his back problems would be with him always and sometimes limited his ability to play.

Even with his injuries Couples continued to win tournaments and titles. His determination, say the Grupo Mayan golf pros, garnered him more fans than ever. He went on to win four major golfing titles.

Freddie Cool has turned his passion for golf toward golf course design. He and his company design many courses throughout the world based on Couples instincts and love of the game. He also finds time, according to the Grupo Mayan golf pros, to participate in charity work. He hosts a charity golf tournament in his hometown of Seattle every year. He has also developed a fund in honor of his mother to aid people in need.

The Grupo Mayan golf pros say that Fred Couples, with his booming drive and laidback style, has been one of golf´s favorite players of this generation. His fans continue to discuss his tournament play and many golfers watch his videos in order to mimic his famous “smooth” swing. Way to go, Freddie Cool!

Grupo Mayan Resorts: Golf Clubs : Wedges

The Grupo Mayan golf pros tell their golfing students that wedges are irons. This is confusing to many beginning golfers but is an important distinction. Wedges are not called irons and have their own class because of the unique part they play in your golf game.

There are three main wedges that beginning golfers should be aware of and have in their golf bag. The gap wedge, the lob wedge, and the sand wedge are the three most used wedges according to the Grupo Mayan golf pros. Golfers can purchase each of these wedges separately or buy them in a set.

Beginning golfers will utilize a wedge, the pitching wedge, which is not really a wedge at all. It is an iron, usually a three iron. More advanced players will use gap wedges and lob wedges. Sand wedges are used by all players regardless of ability or style.

Wedges are specialized clubs. They are used for accuracy when shooting. According to the Grupo Mayan golf pros wedges are scoring clubs ñ if you are aiming for the flag a wedge is the club to use.

Wedges have short shafts, the shortest in your golf bag. They also give the greatest loft. Because of their ability at loft, say the Grupo Mayan pros, wedges are labeled depending on the loft they offer. For example, you will not find a three wedge : you will find a sixty-degree wedge. The number refers to the amount of loft the club delivers. The Sixty-degree wedge is the lob wedge.

Sand wedges are used to get out of sand traps. Getting out of a sand trap requires a short shot, say the Grupo Mayan pros, and with the lob a golfer gets with the sand wedge he will be able to get his ball out of the trap. A sand wedge will most likely have a loft of fifty-five or fifty-six degrees.

The Grupo Mayan golf pros say that lob wedges are used to ìlobî a golf ball in the air; lob wedges give your ball loft. It is the purpose of this wedge to lift your ball so it falls neatly on the green.

Wedges have a specific “bounce”. This refers to the wedges ability to keep you from digging into the course when you hit the ball. The bounce of a wedge is determined by the head length. Beginning players should not be concerned with the bounce of a wedge as it is generally the same for most wedges.

Golfers will learn through trial and error when it is appropriate to use their wedge clubs. The most important factor is determining if a wedge is needed is the length of the shot. The Grupo Mayan golf pros say a sand wedge is usually 80 yards while a lob wedge can be as short as 40 yards.

The Grupo Mayan golf pro staff hopes the above information helps beginning golfers as they choose clubs for their golf bag. We look forward to working with you on your next Grupo Mayan holiday.

Grupo Mayan Resorts: Golf Clubs-Woods

The Grupo Mayan golf pros realize that choosing the right golf clubs can be confusing, even for a seasoned golf pro. One of the most used clubs is the wood. The Grupo Mayan pros have advice for our guests as they wade through the many choices when choosing their woods.

Each golfer´s bag will usually include several woods. The most common woods are a driver and one or two woods for fairway use. The fairway woods will usually be a three wood or a five wood for male golfers and a seven or nine wood for women. The Grupo Mayan golf pros tell us that these are only generalities; some golfers even use four woods or eleven woods.

A wood can be defined by its deep club head. A wood club head, say the Grupo Mayan pros, is made of metal. The usual metals used for woods are either steel or titanium. Steel club heads are less expensive but most golfers prefer titanium because it is lighter. Woods are sometimes referred to as metals.

As mentioned before, the driver is one of the more popular woods. It is also one of the harder clubs to learn to use. Your go to driver will most likely be a one wood and is very long. This length makes it difficult to manipulate and it will take practice to learn to swing your driver.

The Grupo Mayan pros tell beginning golfers that fairway woods are progressive. This means that as the number rises the club has more and more loft. For example, a five wood has more loft than a three wood. This is important to know because the less loft a fairway club has the further it will drive a ball. A three wood will drive your ball further than a five wood.

The second longest club in your golf bag will most likely be your three wood. It has a smaller head than your driver, say the Grupo Mayan pros, as do all woods. The woods will become shorter as their number becomes higher. A two wood is actually the second longest club, longer than a three wood, but most golfers do not have two woods in their bag.

The Grupo Mayan pros say it is important to know that shorter clubs are easier to handle. A five wood, which is shorter than a three wood, will be much easier to manipulate. The Grupo Mayan golf pros urge beginning golfers to keep this fact in mind. Beginners can even use a fairway wood to tee off until they become used to their driver.

The Grupo Mayan golf pros say the reason golfers have woods in their bag is get distance from their swings. Beginners will learn which club to use to get the distance they need for a shot.

The Grupo Mayan pros hope the above tips will help golfers as they purchase and use their golf clubs. If you still have questions the Grupo Mayan pros will be available to help you during your holiday.

Grupo Mayan Resorts: Cristie Kerr

One of golf´s most fascinating women players, say the Grupo Mayan golf pros, is Cristie Kerr. That´s “Cristie” without an “h” as she will be fast to tell reporters who misspell her name.

Cristie Kerr has constantly struggled with weight issue, self : confidence, and her image. She has managed to overcome these barriers and become a sensational golfer say the Grupo Mayan experts.

According to the Grupo Mayan golf pros Cristie Kerr burst onto the golf stage as a young golf prodigy. She began golfing at the age of eight and played with a handicap of two by the time she turned twelve. For two years straight, from 1993 to 1995, she won the Florida State Junior Girls golf tourney.

As Cristie Kerr continued to play she continued to win titles and championships. In 1995, along with her Florida State title she was named the American Junior Golf Association´s player of the year : an honor for any young player.

The next few years, before she even turned eighteen, Kerr won the Western Women´s Amateur tourney and the Florida State Women´s Championship. She had the honor of playing on the United States Curtis Cup team, say the Grupo Mayan pros, in 1996.

All of the above honors would be enough for any professional player and Kerr achieved them all before she even turned pro. After an amazing amateur career, at age eighteen, Kerr turned pro. The Grupo Mayan golf pros tell us that she continued to win and make a name for herself in golfing circles.

It was at this time, when she turned pro, that she began to experience problems. According to the Grupo Mayan golf pros her problems were both professional and personal. Professionally she lost her Q-card, a must on the LPGA, and was forced to return to Q-school to get her card back.

Her weight became an issue at this time and referred to herself as a “four eyed fatty”. She was experiencing family problems, she was not winning consistently, and she felt by other players to have a bad and childish attitude. With all of these problems, say the Grupo Mayan pros, Kerr did not make many friends on the pro circuit.

In 1999 Kerr decided to change her image. She worked with a nutritionist to reach a healthy weight and get in shape. Her fitness coach worked her tirelessly and an image coach transformed her appearance. These changes, report the Grupo Mayan golf pros, boosted Kerr´s self image and she came back to the LPGA tour fighting to win.

Kerr´s improved fitness led to an improved game. She had a better swing and felt better about herself. These changes were reflected in her game play. In 2000 she became one of the top 20 money earners on the LPGA tour.

Kerr is also passionate about charity work. According to the Grupo Mayan golf experts Kerr´s mother was diagnosed with cancer and Kerr immediately used her fame and ability to begin to raise money for Breast Cancer research.

One of golf´s most interesting players is Vijay Singh. He works hard, he wins big, and he is a great person say the Grupo Mayan golfing professionals. He is extremely dedicated to the game of golf and practices for hours every day.

A native of Fiji, Vijay Singh acquired his love of golf from his father. Singh´s father, according to the Grupo Mayan pros, was a mechanic in Fiji who made time to nurture his son´s interest in the sport.

Singh´s family support paid off. The Grupo Mayan professionals tell us that Singh became a professional golfer in 1984. Two years later he won the Malaysian National Open, his first professional golfing victory.

A major turning point for Singh came in 1985. He was accused of altering his golfing score to make the cut in a tournament held in Asia. Singh, say the Grupo Mayan pros, did admit to any wrongdoing and attempted to defend himself but was removed from the tour. His reputation tarnished, Singh left competitive play to work as golf professional at a Borneo resort.

A competitive player at heart, Singh soon began to play in tournaments once again. He won many titles around the world and spent time on the European PGA circuit. Feeling that his reputation had recovered from the false allegations of cheating, Singh began to play in the American PGA in 1993. He was the PGA 1993 Rookie of the year.

Singh´s dedication and hard work led to a Master´s win in 2000. He continued to practice every day and in 2004 he was named the world´s #1 golfer.

By the time Singh achieved his #1 worldwide ranking he was in his 40´s. He did not keep the first place ranking the following year but regained the title in 2006. Grupo Mayan Resorts: The Masters

The most famous tournament in golfing, according to the Grupo Mayan golf pros, is the Masters tournament held each year in Augusta, Georgia. This tournament, one of the four major events on the PGA tour, began in 1934 and has quite a colorful history.

The home of the Masters tournament is the Augusta National Golf Club. The course and club were built in the early 1930´s when Bobby Jones decided he needed a place to play golf upon his retirement from the professional circuit.  The course opened for play in 1933 and the Augusta National Invitational was held the very next year, in 1934. The Grupo Mayan pros tell us that Horton Smith won this first “Masters” event.

In 1935 the Augusta National Invitational became instantly famous when Gene Sarazen hit the “shot heard round the world” when he hit a hole in one on a par 5. Sarazen went on to win in 1935 after an intense round of tiebreakers with Craig Wood.

1935, say the Grupo Mayan pros, also marked the reversal of play on the golf course. Before 1935 holes 10 to 18 were actually played as holes 1 to 9, and vice versa. This reversal has become the permanent playing layout of the course and is still used today.

The Grupo Mayan pros say the name of the tournament was changed in 1939. The Augusta National Invitational became the Masters, the name it is known by today.

During World War II the Augusta National Golf Club closed the golf course to golfers and focused their energy on the war effort. Beginning in 1943 the course was used to house livestock such as cattle, chickens, and turkeys. This effort helped feed people in the surrounding communities during the war years.

During the 1960´s golf became a popular spectator sport. Many of the PGA players during this decade had unique and interesting personalities and were fabulous golfers. Watching the sport was actually interesting. Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus were fan favorites during the 60´s and 70´s and won the Masters tournament over ten times.

The 1990´s, say the Grupo Mayan golf pros, saw a new and younger type of player emerge; foremost among these new players was Tiger Woods. Woods won his first Masters tournament in 1997.

The Augusta National Golf Club has been the site of many controversies, both on and off the course. Spectators have witnessed players get angry, throw clubs, and argue with one another. A major controversy off the course occurred in 2003. According to the Grupo Mayan golf professionals the club was targeted by feminist groups as being a sexist organization. The club did not allow women to join as members and a protest was set to be held at the club during the Masters tournament. Legal pressures stopped the protest and the club continues to be a bastion of manhood.

The colorful history of the Augusta National Golf Club and the Masters tournament is made even more interesting by the many traditions that surround the tournament. One such tradition, say the Grupo Mayan pros, is the “green coat” awarded each year to the winner.

The Masters has, and will continue to be, one of golf´s most prestigious tournaments on the PGA circuit.
