The Grupo Mayan golf pros know that many obstacles can come between the golfer and a good golf game. Weather, the people you are playing with, the course you are playing on, and many other factors all contribute to a great golf game. Here are some tips from the Grupo Mayan pros on enjoying your golf game to the fullest.
- A great time can make or break your game. If you are a player affected by heat you will want to play during the cooler times of the day. If you like uncrowded courses you should check with the local pro to find out when the course has a lower occupancy. The Grupo Mayan pros say they enjoy playing early in the morning and some golf courses offer tee times starting at five in the morning.
- Another great golf tip from the Grupo Mayan pros is to look forward to the 19th hole. If you find yourself becoming bored or distracted during the game, think about how much fun you will have once you reach the clubhouse. Cocktails and comrades are also a good motivator. Just think of all the great golf stories you can share once your reach the club bar.
- If you are a golfer who becomes physically tired when playing this can also affect the way you feel about the game. Stay in shape, say the Grupo Mayan pros. The game of golf can be very strenuous, especially if you walk the course and do not rent a cart. You game will not be fun, say the Grupo Mayan pros, if you are only looking forward to pull and sore muscles after the game is over. By keeping in shape you will be playing at your peak. You will not only feel better before and after play but also afterwards.
- Golf is a game to be played outdoors. Enjoy it; say the Grupo Mayan golf pros. Golf courses offer some of the most beautiful green spaces in the world and it is a privilege to be able to play on them.
- Keep up your golf game, advice the Grupo Mayan pros. You will not look forward to playing a game with your friends or business partners if you are rusty and have not played for a while. Even if you can only play a few times a month it will be enough to keep your skill levels high. If you can´t fit in a full game try to go to a driving range once a week.
The staff at all of the Grupo Mayan resorts hopes that these tips will help you enjoy every golf game. You do not have to be a golf pro to have a great time playing. When you are at your Grupo Mayan resort be sure to schedule time with one of our pros and get some tips and tricks to improve your game.
The Grupo Mayan resorts encourage you to pre-book your tee times before your vacation. Guests may visit the Grupo Mayan web site to pre- book tee times that work with your vacation schedule.

The Grupo Mayan resort golf pros say that the beginning golfer does not need to rush out and spend hundreds of dollars on new clubs. This would be a huge financial mistake if you decided that golf was not the sport for you. Here are some tips for the new golfer from the Grupo Mayan pros.
The beginning golfer will want to learn about his style of golf before investing in golf clubs. How do you do this? The Grupo Mayan pros have a one-word answer: practice! Once a new golfer becomes familiar with the sport and his golf style he will be better able to determine the type of clubs that suit his needs.
If you are new to the golf game you might consider renting golf clubs, say the Grupo Mayan pros. Many clubs and courses have rental clubs available for golfers as a minimal fee. These clubs are the best way for the beginning golfer to get a feel for the game. Friends and family members may also have clubs they can loan so don´t be afraid to ask.
They will probably be overjoyed that you want to play the game.
If you choose, say the Grupo Mayan pros, you can buy a used set of golf clubs. The best place to purchase used clubs is at a pro shop. The clerk will be able to give you specific advice about the style of clubs and help you determine your needs. If you are buying at a yard sale or from friends remember that what works for them may not work for you but thank them for their advice.
The Grupo Mayan pros tell us that all new golfers should use what is called a one half set of golf clubs. The one half set will have only the most basic of clubs and give the new golfer the ability to fine tune his game using these all around clubs before moving on to specialty clubs. The Grupo Mayan staff advices that if you are happy with your one half set you can complete the set after you feel more confident with your game and not have to repurchase the clubs from your one half set.
The best way to purchase a used golf clubs is to actually hold them in your hand and swing them to get a feel for what you want. The feel of a golf club clearly seems to be all-important. But, what is ‘feel’? There is no scientific formula that defines it. In general, feel can be described as the way a golfer feels a club when he or she swings it depends on its swing weight and the flexibility of its shaft.
There are more things the new golfer should consider when buying clubs, but the advice above is a great place to start. On your next Grupo Mayan vacation our golf pros will work with you to help you make a good decision on the purchase of your clubs.

The Grupo Mayan golf pros know that our golf loving guests love to practice their sport whenever they get a chance. One question the pros regularly receive is how a golfer can practice when he cannot get to the golf course. Here is some advice that will hopefully answer your question.
Many Grupo Mayan guests have considered the option of building their own putting greens at home. While this is a great idea and will give the golfer many opportunities to practice there are still some things to be considered.
Artificial or fake grass is the number one choice of turf for home putting greens. It needs little care and be used year round. The golfer must remember, warn the Grupo Mayan pros that fake turf will play differently than real grass so adjustments will have to be made on actual golf courses. Most of our guests live in climates that would not make real grass putting greens an option for year round practice, so even with the differences between real and fake turf the fake turf is the better option. The Grupo Mayan pros say that the adjustment should not be problem as golfers constantly adjust to changing green conditions depending on weather.
In order to determine the type of artificial grass you want to install the Grupo Mayan pros suggest you visit golf websites and local turf suppliers to see what they suggest. The websites and store clerks will be up to date on all of the latest advances in turf and offer you great suggestions.
There are also many wonderful websites that give instructions on building your putting green. Most of these sites offer step-by-step instructions that are easy to follow and allow the golfer to install his own outing green with minimal effort. When designing your green you will want to place it in an area of little or no grass or undergrowth. The golfer must also decide the shape and landscaping of his green along with cup placement say the Grupo Mayan pros. Once these decisions have been made the golfer can lay a layer of stone as his green base, layer the turf and go from there.
Having your own personal putting green will give the golfer the opportunity to improve his game all year long. Imagine coming home from work and being able to practice putting while grilling a few steaks. How about inviting a few fellow golfers over for a putting challenge? The possibilities of having your own putting green are endless.
The Grupo Mayan pros hope the above advice has been helpful. We look forward to seeing you at one of our Mexican resorts soon. We have added many advances to our courses and pro shops and are in the process of building several new golf courses. While on vacation at Grupo Mayan make plans to work with our pros in a seminar or class. The Grupo Mayan pros will be happy to give you tips to improve your game.

One of the famous golfing events on the PGA tour is the United Sates Open Championship say the Grupo Mayan golf professionals. The U.S. Open is the yearly open golf tourney for the United States and is one of the big four. The PGA considers the U.S. Open to be one of the best tournaments on the tour and it is also on the European tour.
The U.S. Open is held in June each year and the final round of play is always held on Fathers Day ñ the third Sunday in June. Hosted by the United States Golfing Association, the U.S. Open is held on a different golf course each year. Scoring the tournament is unusual say the Grupo Mayan pros. A major part of each golfer´s score in the U.S. Open comes from driving.
According to the Grupo Mayan golf pros the U.S. Open is a tough tourney. Winners rarely come in under par and there is always tight competition between players. This competition makes the Open one of the PGA´s most exciting events.
The United States Golfing Association always chooses difficult courses for the open. Courses usually have longer fairways and more hills than the average course say the Grupo Mayan golf pros. It has become so competitive to host the Open that many courses are being reworked to fit U.S. Open preferences.
The Grupo Mayan golf pros report that the first U.S. Open was held in 1985. It was originally played in October, not June. The first open, played in Rhode Island, was a thirty six-hole tourney with all holes being played in one day. The tournament was open to both pros and amateurs and the winner was a pro at the club hosting the Open. Horace Rawlins, from England, was twenty-one when he won the Open. The winning player took home $150 dollars and a medal. This is a big difference from todays winnings say the Grupo Mayan pros.
British players continued to win the Open for several years. It was not until 1911 that an American first won the tournament. Since then Americans began to win consistently. South Africa is only other nation to have golfers who have won several Open titles.
This past year the U.S. Open saw one of its most exciting endings ever. The Grupo Mayan golf pros tell us that the 2008 Open ended regular play in a tie between Tiger Woods and Rocco Mediate. The two golfers were forced to participate in a grueling series of tiebreakers. The first tiebreaker, at 18 holes, also ended in a tie. This continued for five consecutive days. The two golfers played an amazing 90 holes and still walked away with a tie score.
To determine a winner, say the Grupo Mayan pros, a sudden death match was held. This had occurred only twice before in Open history. Woods won the sudden death making it his third Open win.
You may never play in the U.S. Open but according to the Grupo Mayan golfing experts you can play the courses where past Opens have been held!

One of golf´s greatest players, say the Grupo Mayan pros, was Tommy Bolt. His long and successful career was inspirational to many golfers and entertaining for his many fans.
Bolt, born in 1916, became interested in golf at an early age. He worked as a golf caddie when he was just 13. He was inspired by Al Espinosa, a pro golfer who visited the club where he caddied, and he became determined to become a pro golfer himself.
Bolt did not immediately step into pro golf. According to the Grupo Mayan golf pros bolt joined the United States Army and served during World War II. Upon leaving the army he renewed his interest in golf and continued to hone his golf skills while working construction jobs.
By the age of 32 Bolt was ready to golf full time. He joined the pro tour circuit and became to make a name for himself. He won many titles and in 1958 won the coveted U. S. Open say the Grupo Mayan golf pros. This win was special to Bolt because the tournament was held in his home state of Oklahoma.
After his U. S. Open win in 1958 Bolt continued to play on the professional golf circuit for a few more years and won his final title in 1961. He then worked to create the Senior PGA Tour, now known as the Senior PGA Championship.
Bolt´s popularity played a big role in the creation of the senior league. Television viewers enjoyed watching him play and he brought good ratings to the networks. This, say the Grupo Mayan golf pros, convinced the powers that be to institute the Senior Golf Tour.
Bolt will most likely be remembered for his temper tantrums and on course antics. He was one of golf´s first showmen and brought interest in the sport to an all time high. His temper was so well known and occurred frequently enough that his peers named him Terrible Tommy.
Terrible Tommy lived up to his nickname. According to the Grupo Mayan golf pros he was well known for throwing his golf clubs on the course when he became frustrated with his shooting or with another golfer. He later confessed that his club throwing was sometimes due to the fact that people came expect it from him. Fans tuned in on their TV sets and came to tournaments to see Bolt have a temper tantrum and he performed for them. The Grupo Mayan golf experts say what started as a real outburst of anger became Bolt´s gimmick and fans ate it up : they loved him.
Despite his antics on the golf course Bolt was voted into the Golfing Hall of Fame. He achieved this honor in 2002. Bolt continued to play until he was well into his eighties and also continued to perform for his fans. Terrible Tommy never lost his edge or his talent for showmanship. The Grupo Mayan golf pros report that Bolt sadly passed away in 2008. His long career entertained many golf fans.

The Grupo Mayan golf pros want all of our guests to have a pleasant experience while golfing during their holiday. With this in mind, our golf pros offer the following golfing etiquette tips.
- Safety is important. Make sure to be aware of your surroundings before swinging your golf club say the Grupo Mayan golf pros. Make sure there are no golfers standing close enough to be hit when you swing.
- Do not swing toward another golfer. Debris from the ground can be loosened and hit the person when you swing.
- If you are playing behind a group of golfers, say the Grupo Mayan pros, make sure they are not where they could be hit when you swing.
- Remember to yell “fore” if your ball is headed toward someone or you are aiming at an area that is populated.
- Drive safely. Just as with a car, a golf cart can be dangerous if not driven responsibly. You are encouraged by the Grupo Mayan pros to not drink and drive.
- No temper tantrums. You will not only embarrass yourself, you could harm someone. Never throw your golf clubs in anger.
- Keep a good pace. The Grupo Mayan golf pros encourage you to be prepared when it is your turn to hit and to not cause unnecessary delays. Remember there are people playing behind you.
- Don´t waste a long time looking for a lost ball. The rule is to spend five minutes looking for a lost ball. If there is a group behind you it is best to wave them forward as you search for your ball.
- If you are the designated driver you will find that there is “golf cart etiquette”. The Grupo Mayan pros tell guests to be aware of where golf balls are hit and who hit which ball. If you are dropping golfers off at their balls you should drop the first hitter off first.
- Take the clubs you think you will need when you leave the cart. It is a waste of time to have to return to the cart and will hold up golfers behind you.
- ï Putting greens can become crowded. You should only be on the green when it is your turn to putt says the Grupo Mayan golf pros. As soon as you have completed your putt you should leave the green in deference of the other golfers.
The Grupo Mayan golf courses are carefully and professionally maintained.
- Follow all posted signs for golf carts. The Grupo Mayan golf pros warn that there are several places on the course that carts are not allowed. Stay on the golf cart paths at all times.
- Do not park or drive near the green areas. It is also a good idea to steer clear of course hazards.
- If your club causes a divot make sure to replace the grass.
- Balls can leave marks on the green. Smooth these marks over before moving to the next hole.

The Grupo Mayan golf professionals tell us that Se Ri Pak knows how to make an entrance. In 1998 she emerged from out of nowhere to become one of the seasons best rookie golfers. Proud of her heritage, Se Ri Pak has inspired many Korean golfers during her career.
Growing up in South Korea Pak got a late start playing golf. The Grupo Mayan golf pros tell of players starting at very young ages and everyone knows Tiger Woods first held a club when he was two. Pak first picked up golf clubs when she was fourteen. She had previously been a track star in school and has created her success to her strong thighs, which give her great balance and help her swing.
Even with her later than normal start, say the Grupo Mayan golf pros, she had a stellar amateur career in South Korea. She won thirty championships before she turned pro in 1996. She played in the Korean LPGA and won six of the fourteen events she played.
America first saw Pak in 1997 say the Grupo Mayan golf pros. It was in 1997 that she obtained her Q-card and she joined the LPGA tour the following year. The Grupo Mayan golf pros remember this as the year Pak burst on to the American golf scene by winning a huge tourney, the LPGA Championship.
Pak racked up an amazing number of wins during her rookie year. She won the LPGA Championship, the United States women´s Open, the Jamie Farr Kroger Classic, and other major LPGA titles. Her wins garnered her the coveted rookie of the year award. Unfortunately, say the Grupo Mayan golf pros, she barely missed being named player of the year. That award went to Annika Sorenstam who had the highest point total.
Over the next few years, say the Grupo Mayan golf pros, Pak continued to play well and win. She and Sorenstam continued to vie for player of the year and money winner of the year honors. Pak never won these top awards, being barely edged out by Sorenstam each year.
Pak is well known for competing against men. In 2003 she placed tenth in a Korean men´s tourney. This was not one of Pak´s best years on the LPGA circuit and she went into a losing streak for the next few years. She claims she was burned out from non-stop play and suffering from many different injuries.
In 2006 Pak made a major comeback and won the LPGA championship. Her many fans were happy to see her back in top form. Her easygoing style and polite demeanor had earned her a huge fan base during her years of play and they stayed with her even during her bad years say the Grupo Mayan golf pros.
Se Ri Pak became a member of LPGA Hall of Fame in 2007. Her success in the golfing world has been an inspiration to many Korean golfers. Both men and women golfers in Korea thank Pak for breaking cultural barriers in the golfing world.

You may be familiar with tennis elbow say the Grupo Mayan golf pros, but have you ever heard of golfers elbow? It is a real medical condition that affects many golfers. While it is similar to tennis elbow, the Grupo Mayan golf pros say there are some differences.
Golfers elbow is known in the medical community as medical epicondylitis. According to the Grupo Mayan golf pros it, like tennis elbow, is caused by over using muscle. The difference lies in the area affected and the type of movement that causes the pain.
Golfers elbow is one form of the more commonly recognized tendonitis. This condition occurs when tendons, which are the part of the muscle that attaches to the bone, becomes inflamed. The medical name derives from the name of the bone area the muscle attaches to, the epicondylitis. The inflammation in this area is what causes the pain associated with golfers elbow say the Grupo Mayan golf pros. The pain is described as a shooting pain down the golfer´s forearm and occurs when using a gripping motion.
Golfers elbow, say the Grupo Mayan golf pros, is usually the result of repetitive motion. A repetitive stress injury occurs when a certain movement is performed over and over again. According to the Grupo Mayan golf pros more instances of golfers elbow is seen at the start of each golf season. This is the time of year when golfers increase the repetitive motion of certain movements. The particular repetitive motions that lead to golfers elbow are also seen in carpenters and other people who use these same movements.
Thankfully, say the Grupo Mayan golf pros, golfers elbow is not a long-term problem and is treatable. It rarely requires surgery and can be corrected with physical therapy. The Grupo Mayan pros offer the following list of treatment options for golfers elbow.
- Modification :the golfer can change his style or the repetitive movement that led to the problem.
- Equipment modification: the golfer can modify his equipment. Making sure golf clubs are the correct length is very important to avoiding a stress injury.
- OTC medications: over the counter medications that have anti-inflammatory properties work well to reduce swelling and ease pain.
- Shots: cortisone injections, a type of steroid, have been shown to help in severe cases of golfers elbow.
- Exercising: stretching and exercising will help get the golfers body in shape. This is a great idea at the beginning of the season say the Grupo Mayan pros. Golfers elbow is less likely to occur if the golfer has toned the muscles used in swinging the golf club.
The Grupo Mayan golf pros urge all golfers to focus on getting in shape before golf season begins. It is much easier to prevent an injury than to heal an injury. The best way to avoid golfers elbow is to practice your swing during the off-season on a regular basis and to lift weights to strengthen your forearm muscles.
